You can't fill out brackets for it like the other big contest
going on this month, but you can sense the excitement as the list
gets smaller.
Finalists for the 23rd annual Small Business Awards, Memphis Business
Journal's own version of the Final Four, have been named and are
now ready for the next round of competition. As a group, this year's
finalists are testaments to the diversity of small business in the
Mid-South, ranging from manufacturers of bulky building products
to manufacturers of delicate medical devices and from restaurants
to liquor stores. The awards in each of four categories will be
presented at a banquet on May 6 at The Peabody.
Small Business of the Year Awards will be given to businesses in
three categories: 1-25 employees, 26-75 employees and 76-350 employees.
The Small Business Executive of the Year award will be given to
an executive from a company with 350 or fewer employees.
Archimania, a full-service architecture and design firm; Jeffrey
Blackledge, Todd Walker and Barry Yoakum, principals.
Custom Fence Co. of Collierville, Inc., which specializes in the
fabrication and installation of iron fences, gates and furniture;
Nadim Saddiqui, president.
Genome Explorations, provider of profiling services for academic
and non-academic research institutes; Divyen H. Patel, CEO and founder.
Point2Point, a technology company specializing in cabling, wireless
and network services, voice and Web services; William A. Fredrick,
president and CEO.
Running Pony Productions, a full-service video production and communications
firm; Gary Blankenship, Jonathan Epstein and Rod Starns, owners.
Appraisal Forum, a residential real estate appraisal service company
that uses Web-based technology; Carsten and Bethany Kaaz, co-founders.
Buster's Liquors and Wines, the largest retail distributor of wine
and spirits in the state; Romulus Morgan Hammond III, president
and owner.
Crew Training International, Inc., designer and developer of Crew
Resource Management for corporate, commercial and military aviation
clients; Allen Mullen, president.
Marble Products, Inc., custom manufacturer of cast polymer products;
Mike Feltus, president.
Signature Advertising, local advertising company; Mark Henry, president.
BCS Industries LLC, a steel processor specializing in the production
of processed wire and bar stock; Joseph Higdon, president.
Corky's Bar-B-Q, Inc., operators of full service barbecue restaurants;

Huey's Consulting and Commissary, a chain of full-service restaurants;
Thomas Boggs, president/CEO.
Nursing Innovations, Inc., a nationwide temporary health care staffing
firm; W. Lee Booth, CEO.
Team1 Auto Body and Glass, automotive collision repair centers;
Tom Hutton Jr., president.
Ron Campbell, president of Kitchens Unlimited, which specializes
in designing and installing residential kitchens.
Frank Canady, president/CEO of Shelby Systems, Inc., a developer
and seller of software for managing membership and accounting records
for churches.
Jackie Nichols, executive producer of Playhouse on the Square, professional
resident theater company.
Marc Richelsoph, president and CEO of Spinal Innovations, a designer,
manufacturer and distributor of spinal implant systems for spinal
disorders.
Stan White, president of Grand Events and Party Rentals, a supplier
of products and services for parties and events.
